Recording, conserving and promoting the landscape and rocks of the Sheffield region

Sheffield Area Geology Trust (SAGT)

The Sheffield Area Geology Trust (SAGT) was formed in September 2008, and incorporated the South Yorkshire RIGS (Regionally Important Geological Sites) Group (SYRG) and the Sheffield Building Stones Group. These groups were established in 1991 and 1999 respectively and covered the district Local Authority areas within South Yorkshire, including the area within the Peak District National Park.

SAGT is a small group of (mostly) retired geologists - all volunteers, who work on geology projects in South Yorkshire on a part-time basis. We receive no regular funding.

We are occasionally asked by students if we offer grants or 'work placement'. Our financial circumstances do not permit this, however, we encourage participation by students on specific field activities if it is relevant to their studies and can be accommodated in everyone's schedules. We have also established links with universities and are happy to liaise with tutors as they find local projects for their students to undertake.

SAGT is a not-for-profit group which promotes the appreciation and understanding of earth science and also the conservation of geological sites in South Yorkshire.

We maintain a neutral, impartial position on political issues and we do not get involved in campaigns nor provide advice or information to campaigners. We also do not permit our name and logo to be used for any campaigning purpose.

SAGT's logo depicts a Lepidodendron, a lycopod plant which grew to the height of 30 metres or more during Carboniferous times (300 million years ago). The fossilised stump of one of these plants can be seen in the Evolution Garden in the Sheffield Botanical Gardens.
